Signs of Overwatering
A dark, mushy, blackened base and leaves that pull out easily mean the plant was left wet for too long without drying out between waterings - the single most common way to kill an air plant.
Signs of Underwatering
Leaves curl tightly, look grey and dry, and feel brittle when the plant hasn't been watered often enough.
Adjusting for the Seasons
Unlike every other plant on this list, air plants have no soil to check - they need direct misting or a full soak instead, and must be shaken dry afterward or they'll rot.
Pro Tip
After soaking, always turn the plant upside down for an hour or two to let excess water drain out of the base - water trapped in the center is the #1 cause of death.
