Signs of Overwatering
A constantly soggy moss pad that never fully dries between soakings encourages the shield frond to rot and turn black at its base.
Signs of Underwatering
The antler-shaped fertile fronds go limp and droopy, and the round shield fronds at the base turn brown and papery before the plant fully wilts.
Adjusting for the Seasons
Because it's usually mounted rather than potted, water by dunking the whole moss pad in a sink or bucket until saturated, then let it dry almost completely before the next soak - this rhythm slows down a lot in winter.
Pro Tip
Never remove the brown, papery shield fronds at the base - they look dead but they are alive and protecting the roots, and pulling them off can seriously set the plant back.
